Lunt Solar Systems is an American specialist manufacturer of solar telescopes and filters, founded in 2007 in Tucson, Arizona, by optical engineer Andy Lunt. Andy had previously been the lead engineer at Coronado Instruments, founded by his father David Lunt, where he was closely involved in developing the H-alpha solar telescopes that helped make detailed solar observing accessible to amateur astronomers.
Lunt’s defining innovation is its pressure-tuned H-alpha technology. By changing the air pressure inside a sealed chamber surrounding the etalon, the wavelength can be tuned precisely without mechanically stressing or tilting the optical element. Lunt also developed manufacturing techniques that made high-quality solar etalons practical to produce at scale.
