Vaonis is a French manufacturer founded in 2016 in Montpellier by Cyril Dupuy, an amateur astronomer and aerospace engineer. Frustrated by the complexity, weight and cumbersome setup of traditional telescopes, Dupuy set out to rethink the amateur astronomy experience from the ground up.
The result was Stellina, introduced as the world’s first fully integrated smart telescope. Rather than simply automating a conventional telescope, Vaonis combined the optics, camera, motors, computer, autofocus and image processing into a single compact instrument controlled from a smartphone. This approach was subsequently developed into the Vespera range and has helped establish the smart telescope as a new category in amateur astronomy.
Vaonis is particularly distinctive for its emphasis on simplicity, automation, industrial design and user experience. The company has earned a reputation for making sophisticated astronomical imaging remarkably accessible, while retaining enough optical and imaging capability to appeal beyond complete beginners.
