The Celestron StarSense Explorer 8″ Dobsonian Telescope combines the proven performance of a traditional 203mm Dobsonian reflector with innovative StarSense Explorer smartphone technology, making it easier than ever to locate celestial objects without motors or GoTo electronics.
The Celestron StarSense Explorer 8″ Dobsonian brings together one of astronomy’s most popular telescope designs with innovative smartphone-assisted navigation. Built around a classic 203mm Newtonian reflector on a manually operated Dobsonian mount, it delivers the light-gathering capability and ease of use that have made 8-inch Dobsonians a favourite among amateur astronomers, while significantly reducing the learning curve associated with finding objects in the night sky.
Its standout feature is Celestron’s patented StarSense Explorer technology. Rather than relying on the phone’s compass or motion sensors, the supplied smartphone dock uses the camera together with Celestron’s Lost in Space Algorithm (LISA) to determine exactly where the telescope is pointed. The StarSense Explorer app then guides the user with simple on-screen arrows until the selected celestial object is centred in the eyepiece. This provides much of the convenience of a GoTo telescope while retaining the simplicity, reliability and affordability of a fully manual Dobsonian.
The telescope’s 203mm parabolic primary mirror collects over 840 times as much light as the unaided human eye, allowing detailed observations of the Moon, planets, globular clusters, nebulae and galaxies. With a focal length of 1200mm and an f/5.9 focal ratio, it provides an excellent balance between wide-field deep-sky viewing and higher magnification for lunar and planetary observation.
Unlike many entry-level Dobsonians, the StarSense Explorer 8 uses a primary mirror manufactured from low-expansion optical glass, helping maintain optical stability as temperatures fall during the evening. The mirror is finished with Celestron’s XLT reflective coatings and durable silicon dioxide and tantalum pentoxide protective layers, maximising light throughput while helping protect the optical surfaces over years of regular use.
Focusing is handled by a smooth 2″ Crayford focuser supplied with both a 2″-to-1.25″ adapter and a 2″ extension tube, allowing immediate compatibility with a wide range of astronomical eyepieces. A 25mm Plössl eyepiece is included for low-power observing, while the supplied StarPointer red-dot finder assists with initial alignment of the StarSense Explorer system.
The Dobsonian mount provides a stable observing platform with smooth altitude and azimuth movement, making manual tracking intuitive even at higher magnifications. Because the telescope remains entirely manual, there are no drive motors, complex electronics or alignment routines required before observing. This simplicity makes the telescope highly reliable while keeping maintenance requirements low.
As with all manually operated Dobsonians, astrophotography is limited to short-exposure images of bright targets such as the Moon and planets using suitable cameras. The telescope is designed primarily for visual astronomy, where its large aperture and intuitive object-finding system deliver the greatest benefit.
Combining the proven performance of an 8-inch Dobsonian with Celestron’s innovative StarSense Explorer technology, this telescope offers an excellent balance of aperture, simplicity and modern assisted navigation. It is particularly well suited to beginners who want help locating celestial objects, as well as experienced observers seeking a capable visual telescope without the complexity of a fully motorised GoTo system.
