Designed as the observing companion to the acclaimed interstellarum Deep Sky Atlas, the interstellarum Deep Sky Guide brings the deep-sky charts to life with an extensive collection of images, sketches, and practical observing information. It is designed to help astronomers prepare for an observing session and, just as importantly, to identify and assess objects at the telescope.
The Guide covers 2,362 deep-sky objects, with concise descriptions, catalogue information, and practical observing advice including recommended filters and magnifications. More than 1,700 colour finder charts based on Palomar Observatory Sky Survey imagery show the surrounding field, while 821 detailed pencil sketches provide an excellent indication of how objects may actually appear through an eyepiece.
The Guide uses the same page numbering as the interstellarum Deep Sky Atlas, allowing observers to move quickly between the detailed atlas charts and the corresponding object information. The finder charts can also be useful with other star atlases and observing resources.
A particularly valuable feature is the combination of photographic data and visual sketches: the former reveal the surrounding field and subtle structures, while the sketches give observers a realistic impression of what can be seen visually through an amateur telescope. Together, they make the interstellarum Deep Sky Guide an exceptionally practical reference for planning and conducting deep-sky observing sessions.
