The Celestron Origin Mark II is a premium intelligent home observatory that combines Celestron’s revolutionary 6-inch RASA optical system, a high-sensitivity Sony imaging sensor and advanced AI-powered image processing into one fully automated smart telescope. Designed exclusively for astrophotography, it delivers observatory-class deep-sky images with minimal setup, making advanced astronomical imaging accessible to both beginners and experienced enthusiasts.

  • 152mm RASA optical system: Large-aperture Rowe-Ackermann Schmidt Astrograph gathers over three times more light than typical 50mm smart telescopes for brighter, more detailed images.
  • Ultra-fast f/2.2 optics: Extremely fast focal ratio captures more light in less time, reducing exposure times while revealing faint deep-sky objects.
  • Sony STARVIS 2 imaging sensor: High-resolution Sony IMX678 colour CMOS sensor delivers excellent sensitivity and low-noise performance.
  • AI-powered astrophotography: Automatically aligns, stacks and intelligently processes images in real time as data is captured.
  • Fully automated intelligent observatory: StarSense auto-alignment, autofocus and GoTo tracking allow imaging to begin in just a few minutes.

Description

The Celestron Origin Mark II Intelligent Home Observatory represents a new generation of automated astrophotography systems, combining observatory-grade optics with intelligent automation to deliver exceptional deep-sky imaging performance. Designed around Celestron’s renowned Rowe-Ackermann Schmidt Astrograph (RASA) optical system, the Origin Mark II brings together a premium astrograph, precision GoTo mount, integrated astronomical camera and powerful onboard computer into a single, fully automated imaging platform.

Unlike most compact smart telescopes, the Origin Mark II features a substantial 152mm aperture. This large light-gathering capability allows the telescope to collect significantly more light than smaller smart telescopes, revealing faint nebulae, galaxies and star clusters with greater brightness, finer detail and improved colour in considerably less time.

At the heart of the telescope is Celestron’s patented 6-inch Rowe-Ackermann Schmidt Astrograph (RASA). This specialised astrograph design delivers a 335mm focal length with an exceptionally fast f/2.2 focal ratio, making it one of the fastest commercially available smart telescopes. The combination of large aperture and ultra-fast optics dramatically reduces the exposure time required to capture faint astronomical objects while producing sharp, well-corrected images across the field of view. StarBright XLT optical coatings further maximise light transmission for improved image brightness and contrast.

Image acquisition is handled by the Sony IMX678 STARVIS 2 colour CMOS sensor. The modern back-illuminated sensor combines excellent sensitivity with low read noise, allowing the telescope to capture fine detail while maintaining outstanding image quality under a wide range of observing conditions. Its high-resolution 8.3-megapixel output is carefully matched to the RASA optical system, providing an ideal balance between image detail and sensitivity.

Once powered on, the Origin Mark II uses Celestron’s patented StarSense technology to automatically focus, identify the night sky, align itself and prepare for imaging without manual intervention. After selecting a target within the Origin Powered by SkySafari app, the telescope automatically slews to the object, centres it accurately and continuously tracks its movement across the sky throughout the imaging session.

As data is collected, advanced onboard AI algorithms automatically align, stack and process each exposure in real time. Rather than generating artificial detail, the system applies sophisticated astrophotography processing techniques to enhance the data captured by the telescope, progressively revealing faint structures, improving contrast and reducing image noise while preserving the authenticity of the original observations.

The Origin Mark II also supports more advanced imaging workflows as users develop their astrophotography skills. Raw image files can be downloaded for processing in dedicated astrophotography software, while the integrated filter drawer accepts both 1.25-inch and 2-inch astronomical filters, allowing users to optimise imaging for different celestial targets and observing conditions.

Designed as a complete portable observatory, the Origin Mark II incorporates an integrated rechargeable LiFePO₄ battery providing over six hours of operation, dual cooling fans, automatic dew prevention, onboard computing and Wi-Fi connectivity. Despite its advanced capabilities, the complete system assembles quickly without tools, making it practical for both garden observing and transport to darker skies.

As a dedicated smart telescope, the Celestron Origin Mark II is designed exclusively for digital astronomy and astrophotography. It does not include an eyepiece and cannot be used as a conventional visual telescope. Instead, all observing, telescope control and image acquisition are performed through the Origin Powered by SkySafari smartphone or tablet app, delivering a streamlined observing experience while producing deep-sky images that would traditionally require significantly more complex astrophotography equipment.
