The Explore Scientific MN-152 David H. Levy Comet Hunter is a premium Maksutov-Newtonian telescope designed for wide-field observing and astrophotography with excellent edge-to-edge image correction.
The Explore Scientific MN-152 David H. Levy Comet Hunter is a specialized Maksutov-Newtonian reflector telescope developed for astronomers who want the contrast and field correction advantages of a catadioptric system combined with the wide-field capability of a fast Newtonian design. Created in collaboration with renowned comet discoverer David H. Levy, the telescope is designed to perform equally well for visual observation and astrophotography.
The telescope features a 152mm aperture and 731mm focal length, providing a fast f/4.8 optical system that is particularly well suited to deep-sky observation, rich-field scanning, and wide-field astrophotography. The moderate focal length allows large celestial objects such as nebulae, open clusters, and expansive star fields to fit comfortably within the field of view while still delivering enough magnification for detailed lunar and planetary observation.
Unlike conventional Newtonian reflectors, the Maksutov-Newtonian optical configuration uses a full-aperture corrector lens to reduce coma and improve edge-of-field sharpness. This results in tighter star images across a much wider area of the field, making the telescope especially attractive for astrophotographers using DSLR or APS-C astronomy cameras. In many situations, additional coma correction is unnecessary, simplifying imaging setup and accessory spacing.
The optical tube is manufactured from carbon fibre, helping reduce overall weight while improving structural rigidity and thermal stability. Carbon fibre construction minimizes expansion and contraction caused by changing temperatures, helping maintain focus consistency during extended observing or imaging sessions.
The telescope is equipped with a 2″ dual-speed Crayford focuser featuring a fine-focus reduction mechanism for precise focus adjustments. Smooth fine-focus control is particularly important when working at faster focal ratios or when capturing astrophotography data where accurate focus is critical. The focuser also supports both 2″ and 1.25″ accessories via the supplied adaptor.
For practical usability, the telescope includes CNC tube rings, a universal dovetail mounting plate compatible with many equatorial mounts, and a sturdy carrying handle that can also be used as an accessory mounting point. An illuminated 8×50 finder scope is supplied to assist with locating objects during observing sessions.
Compared to standard fast Newtonians, the Comet Hunter places greater emphasis on optical correction and image quality across the field. Its combination of sharp optics, fast focal ratio, stable carbon fibre construction, and versatile performance makes it an appealing choice for observers and astrophotographers seeking a compact but capable all-round astronomical instrument.
